Regular readers will know I’ve always had a hate/hate relationship with social media, mostly for two reasons:

1. You don’t own the land you’re building your business on . I once paid Facebook £10,000 a month in Ad spend, built up a 150,000-person fan page, only for them to shut it down overnight, and without explanation. It’s their land. They can (and will) do whatever the hell they like – including shutting you down, or making your reach so terrible, that you’re left with no choice but to pay for Ads to reach your own audience.

2. It’s not an Evergreen Asset. Evergreen Assets are “do the work once, reap the rewards again and again (and again!)”. Social Media is “do the work once, reap the rewards once.” You can have the most successful post ever today, but if you want any eyeballs tomorrow, you’ve got to do it all over again. It’s what One Percenter Mick Walker calls the “social media landfill”, whereby you’re constantly churning out free disposable content for a silicon valley tech company (at the expense of growing your own business through evergreen assets).

After a few years of gritting my teeth and persevering with a Facebook group, I’ve finally decided to close the group down, and focus on my own evergreen assets – on land I own, instead.
